Exploring Robotics with NUS Calibur Robotics

Diving Into The World of Robotics

Recently, Toyogo had the opportunity to visit the workshop of the NUS Calibur Robotics at the NUS (National University of Singapore). It was an exciting chance for us to get a closer look at how their competition robots are designed, built, and tested by the student team. They were preparing for the then-upcoming RoboMaster Robotics Competition in North America, which was why the team was locked in and focused when we arrived.

During the visit, the team's captain, De Qi, kindly took time out of her busy schedule and guided us on a short tour in their workshop and we got to learn more about the engineering and programming that go into developing these machines. The team shared insights into the different components, from the mechanical systems such as the soldering station, 3D printers to the control systems that allow the robots to move with precision and speed. Seeing the amount of thought and innovation behind each build was truly impressive.

We were then introduced to one of their most impressive creations, called the Engineer Robot, with a six-degrees-of-freedom robotic arm. At the end of the arm is a suction end effector, enabling the robot to grip foam cubes and transport them smoothly from one end of the arena to the other. How impressive is that?

Our Support For The Team

As part of our support for the team, Toyogo also sponsored some of our storage products to help keep their workshop organized. With these cabinets and drawers, the team now has a place to store tiny parts, tools, and other workshop essentials. It’s a small contribution, but it helps the students focus on what matters most, building and testing their robots, without worrying about clutter.

Seeing The Robots in Action

One of the highlights of the visit was stepping into their testing arena, called the “dungeon”, where the robots are put through their paces. Our team even had the chance to experience controlling the competition robots firsthand. With a controller in hand, we got a feel for how responsive and agile the machines were as they moved across the arena.

The robots themselves, also known as the Infantry Robots, were incredibly advanced. They were able to spin a full 360 and showcase their shooting mechanisms, firing grape-like projectiles with remarkable accuracy. Watching them in action and trying them out ourselves, was both thrilling and eye-opening.

Young Innovators Are Taking Over

Beyond the excitement, the visit gave us a deeper appreciation for the creativity, teamwork, and technical skill that goes into robotics competitions. It was inspiring to see students pushing the boundaries of engineering and turning complex ideas into fully functional machines.
